EUGENIA VERNELL WATERS was born on July 4, 1953, at Brooks Memorial Hospital, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to parents Mary Louise Dennis Waters and Eugene Venable Waters. Eugene perished in an automobile accident while enroute to work at Ft. Campbell. Eugenia’s well-lived life ended on February 28, 2025.
Eugenia attended and was baptized at Virginia Street Baptist Church, Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She had friends she walked together with to Belmont Grade School and Koffman Junior High School. In 1969, while in Giessen, Germany she began her high school education.
Eugenia completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an associate degree in Data Processing at Cameron University, Lawton, Oklahoma in 1979 and 1981. She would be offered a job at Martin Marietta Data Systems in Denver, Colorado in 1982 utilizing her computer skills and academic training to develop new systems and provide support for maintenance of old systems at Martin Marietta.
Eugenia enjoyed golfing and became proficient at the sport. Discovered in the garage were her specially engraved clubs which were well used. Of course, any goal she set to accomplish she did in a grand style – as evidenced by the trophies and awards she received as a semi-professional golfer.
Eugenia was creative and taught herself to crochet, knit, and embroidery. She learned by observing our mother who was also a writer, gardener, and seamstress. The family has many memories that were left by her – knitted blankets, handmade quilts, and a valued stamp collection.
Eugenia was an avid reader with a penchant for Black History. She was a collector of books, studied The Bible and enjoyed the works of Edgar Casey. She spent years researching and conducting genealogical searches of family members from Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana.
Eugenia leaves a legacy of knowledge having spent a lifetime of learning.
