Born on March 9, 1938, Clifford Eugene Downey was the eldest child of Jake Robert and Lenora (née Nealy) Downey, who raised their family in Oklahoma City. Along with his parents, his sisters, Barbara and Cheryl, and brother, Glen, precede him in death.

Clifford graduated from Oklahoma City’s Douglass High School in 1956. He then met and married the love of his life, Geraldine Marie Carr. To this marriage, they raised 2 sons and 2 daughters together.

Clifford gave his life to the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Bethlehem Star Baptist Church in West Town. Clifford, along with his wife and children, joined the Antioch Institutional Baptist Church under the direction of the late Rev. F.J. Waters, where he served as an usher, and later they joined the Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of the late Rev. Dr. L.R. Drinkwater, Sr.

Clifford started his career as a diesel mechanic and later found himself driving miles and miles cross country as a truck driver for Leeway Trucking, then Fleming Foods to support his wife and their four children. In the early 1990s, he retired from trucking and dedicated himself to one of his highest callings: being a grandfather.

Clifford took interest in numerous hobbies including fishing, gardening, hauling junk and he was known as a grill master, especially for his smoked brisket. Clifford was also known for his fun, kind personality and befriended many people. On any given day, a person could find Clifford hanging out on his porch, probably chatting with one of his neighborhood buddies.

Not long after the sun had risen on April 23, 2022, Clifford, in the comfort of His Heavenly Father, peacefully transitioned home to join his lovely bride, Geraldine Marie, who preceded him in death. His “running buddy” and son-in-law, Vernon Whitney Sr., also precedes him in death.

To cherish his memory and carry his legacy, Clifford leaves behind his sons, James Downey of West Virginia, Cartius (Teaver) Downey of Edmond, OK, daughters, Davie (Jack) Baker of Edmond, OK, and Tammie (Vernon) Whitney of the home, who also served as his caretaker. His sisters, Peggy Jackson of Oklahoma City, Carolyn Banks and Kaye Farah Downey, both of Atlanta, GA. Clifford was a fantastic grandfather and great-grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Malik and Zendaya. Clifford leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends to also honor his legacy.
