Elverisa Jones Boyd

November 16, 1924 — January 21, 2009

Elverisa Jones Boyd was the fifth child born to Henry and Hattie Macklin Jones on November 16, 1924 in Luther, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, Mama Patsy Jones,brothers-Sammuel Ross, Bishop Jones, Hoover Jones, Sylvester Carbajal and Albert Carbajal, sisters-Mayme King, Ardis Bell, Marjorie Isby,and Elizabeth Wells. Elverisa accepted Christ at an early age at the St. Paul Baptist Church, Luther, OK, under the leadership of Pastor l. Roland. She later moved to Oklahoma City and united with Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. George W. Houston. Upon his passing, she joined Ebenezer Baptist Church led by Rev. E. H. Hill. She followed him to Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church, where she remain a faithful member until she became ill. She served as an usher because she loved being a greeter in God's house. Elverisa was affectionately called "Doll Baby" by her family and friends. She was educated in Luther, Oklahoma at James Elementary School District 81 and graduated from Washington High School where she was a member of the marching band. She played the clarinet. To further her education, she enrolled at Langston University and studied at Oklahoma City Community College. While at Langston, she met and married Clifford Lee Boyd, Jr. in 1948. To this union four children were born-Cynthia, Alvah, Ronald, and Michael. She later married Mr. John W. Thomas who preceded her in death. Doll continued her education and graduated from the State Department Vocational Technical Education of Oklahoma as a Licensed Practical Nurse(LPN). She worked at University Hospital, Children's Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Baptist Jim Thorpe Outpatient Rehabilitation, worked as a private duty nurse(15 years), and retired from O'Donoghue. After recuperating from seven or eight head and eye surgeries/procedures from a mini-van accident in August 2001, Elverisa enrolled in Langston University to validate her academic skills were still intact. She was an honor student every semester and graduated from Langston in May 2006. Doll, as a nurse enjoyed meeting the needs of others-physically, spiritually, and emotionally. She was a member or former member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Sarah B. Mosley Court of Heroine of Jericho, E. B. Young Chapter #52 Order of the Eastern Star, NAACP, Top Ladies, Northeast Lions Club, Cosmopolitan Ladies Club and the City-Wide Ushers. Elverisa Jones Boyd is survived by her children: Cynthia Burrough (Myron) of Oklahoma City, OK, Alvah Boyd of Oklahoma City, OK, Rev. Ronald Boyd (Rosetta) of Duncan, OK, and Michael Boyd of Oklahoma City, OK; sisters: Sarah Mosley of Carson, CA, Christine Pollard, Annie C. Kirk of Oklahoma City, OK, and Luci Weaver of Kansas City, MO; sisters-in-law, Glenell Jones and Eloise Carbajal of Oklahoma City, OK; the grand generation: Tamilia Lawrence-Smith (Jonathan) of Oklahoma City, OK, Teresa R. Lawrence of Lawrenceville, GA, and Rondisha Lorene (Edwin); the great-grand generation: Denisha Lawrence and Zhane Bradley of Lawrenceville, GA, Landon and Brandon Payne, Vernon and Clifford Lawrence, LaDeria and Edwin Lorene, Jr., all of Oklahoma City, OK; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; a special friend, Mr. Everett Bowser, and his daughters, Valerie Williams and Lenora Bowman, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.
